As the 2008 VAE Tour Winds Down, the VAE Continues Army Strong

The Virtual Army Experience is slowly winding down its 2008 touring schedule, but October proved to be a busy month. The VAE visited four air shows during the month, making appearances in California, Texas and Arkansas. During October more than 7,000 people had the chance to experience the VAE.

MCAS Miramar Air Show

The VAE returned to the MCAS Miramar Air Show this year – but this time in its Charlie configuration. The three day show was action-packed. From October 3-5, the VAE opened its doors to southern California residents and provided them with the opportunity to experience Soldiering at one of the largest air shows in the country. The local recruiting battalion sent a number of Army assets to complement the VAE. On Sunday, they set-up an Armed Forces challenge in front of the VAE. During the challenge, select members of the Army, Marines, Air Force and Navy took part in rock wall and pull-up competitions. While the Marines took home the gold in the pull-ups, the Army was victorious in the rock wall competition. Coverage of the challenge was broadcast live on Good Morning San Diego Weekend.

Amigo Airsho

While VAE Charlie was on the west coast, the Bravo configuration was in the southwest, at the Amigo Airsho in El Paso, TX. The air show, which was held on Biggs Army Airfield at Ft. Bliss, attracted crowds from all across New Mexico and Texas. On October 4 & 5, attendees mounted up in humvees and the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter and tested their skills on the virtual battlefield. Participants also explored various career opportunities that the Army offers and met Soldiers, including America’s Army Real Hero, SGT Tommy Rieman. The VAE was by far the largest attraction on the flight line and while high winds kept some of the aerial performances grounded, the VAE had long lines and satisfied participants both throughout.

Fort Worth Alliance Air Show

From October 11-12, the VAE headed to the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show in its Alpha configuration. The VAE was even more popular than during its 2007 appearance at the show. Air show goers lined up for hours to get the opportunity to experience the VAE and meet America’s Army Real Hero SGT Tommy Rieman. Over the weekend more than 2,000 people tested their skills inside the VAE. The Dallas/ Fort Worth area hosted an action-packed weekend, as the air show landed on the same weekend as the highly anticipated Red River Shootout – Texas vs. Oklahoma. Luckily Texas fans celebrated after defeating Oklahoma 45-35.

Air Power Arkansas Air Show

Following the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show, the VAE made the short trip to Little Rock, AR for Airpower Arkansas at Little Rock Air Force Base. VAE Alpha had a prime spot on the flight line and the line of attendees ready to step onto the virtual battlefield was hours long all weekend. Little Rock Air Force Base is the training base for C-130 crew members from all branches of the military and the air show included an impressive demonstration of 300 paratroopers jumping out of seven C-130’s at the same time! Between the big drop and the VAE, Airpower Arkansas was a great success.

Louis W. Fox Academic & Technical High School

Wrapping up the month, the VAE headed to San Antonio and opened its doors to high school students from Louis W. Fox Academic & Technical High School. After school on Friday, October 24, 2008, students had the chance to meet Soldiers and take a virtual test drive of the U.S. Army.

With only two events left for 2008 – VAE staff looks forward to seeing you at an upcoming VAE event!

The VAE Travels from the Great State of Maine to the Heartland of Texas

During the month of September the Virtual Army Experience (VAE) was busy turning heads at Air Shows, State Fairs and Balloon Festivals. The VAE drew long lines at each event, proving to be a star attraction, with more than 8,000 people seeing if they had what it takes to be Army Strong®.

The Great State of Maine Air Show

The VAE started the month with a return to the Naval Air Station (NAS) in Brunswick, Maine, September 6-7, for the Great State of Maine Air Show. This was the end of an era for the NAS Brunswick as this year's air show was scheduled to be the final show hosted at the base. The VAE joined the Blue Angeles as one of the main attractions at the show. Over the course of the weekend, close to 2,500 people met America's Army Real Hero SGT Jason Mike and took a virtual test drive of the U.S. Army inside the VAE.

Williamsport Balloon Festival & Air Show and the Tri-State Fair

After the show in Maine, the VAE went modular with the Bravo configuration heading to Williamsport, Pa., and the Charlie configuration stopping in Amarillo, Texas. September 13-14, VAE Bravo made its first appearance at the 4th annual Williamsport Balloon Festival & Air Show. Weather over the weekend was less than ideal causing a number of aerial/ balloon act cancelations. The VAE gave air show goers a place to stay dry under the dome and the chance to test their skills on the virtual battlefield. Visitors also enjoyed meeting America's Army Real Hero SFC Robert Groff. This was SFC Groff's second appearance at a VAE Bravo event, and the VAE staff looks forward to having him at future VAE events. While half of the VAE was on the East Coast, the other half spent 10 days at the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo, Texas. Fair attendees, who mainly came from New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma, had the opportunity to see what a Soldier's life is like and step onto the virtual battlefield. Participants also visited with America's Army Real Hero SGT Jason Mike, who told his story about being a combat medic in Iraq and answered questions about his experiences in the Army.

NAS Oceana Air Show

While VAE Charlie was wrapping up in Texas, Bravo headed down the East Coast to Virginia Beach and the NAS Oceana Air Show. On the show's first day, ROTC participants and other students from the area had the air show grounds and the VAE to themselves. They loved the opportunity to mount up in the Humvees and the UH-60 Black Hawk, and came through the VAE numerous times. September 20-21 the air show was open to the general public and the VAE lines swelled with additional excited attendees. It was another successful trip to the Virginia Beach area, our fourth in the past two years.

The VAE continues to tour the country during the month of October. Our staff looks forward to seeing you at an upcoming VAE event!

The VAE Turns Up the Heat at the End of Summer

As the summer wound down, the VAE was in full swing, touring the country and giving participants the chance to see if they were Army Strong®. During the month of August more than 21,000 people had the chance to experience the VAE and take a virtual test drive of Soldiering.

Six Flags Great Adventure and the Great Indiana State Fair

The VAE began the month in a split configuration, with the Bravo configuration at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ, and the Charlie configuration making its first appearance at the Great Indiana State Fair.

At Six Flags Great Adventure, the VAE was open for 10 days from August 1-10. Six Flags gave the VAE an awesome location—smack dab in the middle of the park! The crowds were excited and the lines quickly swelled as Six Flags attendees lined up to learn more about the Army and step onto the virtual battlefield.

The Bravo configuration wasn't the only part of the VAE among amusement-park rides and corn dogs. While Bravo was in NJ, the Charlie configuration was enjoying Indianapolis' Great Indiana State Fair. The fair is one of the largest state fairs in the country, and it did not disappoint. From August 6 through August 17, the VAE had long lines of excited visitors, and joined top music artists such as Carrie Underwood and Jessica Simpson as one of the fair's main attractions.

Offutt Air Force Base Open House and Air Show

After packing up the dome at Six Flags Great Adventure, the Bravo configuration headed to Nebraska for the Offutt Air Force Base Open House and Air Show. A number of the Air Force's most advanced aircrafts were on display, but the longest line at the entire show was outside the VAE. Over 100,000 people attended the air show each day, and many of them had the opportunity to meet America's Army Real Hero SGT Tommy Rieman and test their Soldiering skills under the VAE dome.

Indianapolis Air Show

The following weekend in Indianapolis, the VAE was back to the full-sized, 20,000-square-foot Alpha configuration at the Indianapolis Air Show. Over the course of the weekend, close to 2,000 people had the chance to see what it takes to be Army Strong®. CNN reporter Susan Roesgen also stopped by to shoot a segment for Wolf Blitzer Reports. Keep an eye on CNN in the upcoming weeks for the story featuring the VAE.

Cleveland National Air Show

The VAE ended the month just down the street from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Cleveland National Air Show. On the shores of Lake Erie, the VAE gave air show attendees the opportunity to take a break from the heat with a virtual test drive of the Army. Air show attendees may have thought they were simply coming to watch planes fly but many ended up on the virtual battlefield, sitting in Humvees and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. As the saying goes, "Cleveland rocks." And this past Labor Day weekend, the VAE rocked Cleveland!

The VAE continues to tour the country during the month of September. Hope to see you at another experience soon!

Great Lakes and Great Times

The Virtual Army Experience spent the month of July around the Great Lakes, with stops in Michigan, Illinois and New York. At each stop along the way, VAE participants enjoyed the chance to learn more about opportunities in the Army, meet members of the America's Army Real Heroes program and step onto the virtual battlefield. During the month, over 1,2975 people took turns in the Virtual Army Experience.

Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival

After sustaining damage to the dome in June, the VAE crew had the VAE up and running in time for the Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival. VAE participants continued to experience the virtual battlefield with the same enthusiasm. The spirit of patriotism was in full swing during the Fourth of July weekend, as air show attendees cheered the roaring jets, looked in awe at hot air balloons and completed their virtual mission inside the VAE. Staff members were also treated to fresh and delicious breakfasts each morning in Battle Creek, the home of Kellogg's cereal.

Six Flags Great America

After a week under the temporary dome in Battle Creek, we were back in full form at Six Flags Great America in Chicago, Ill. For ten days, Six Flags attendees experienced a new type of amusement park ride that allowed them to experience what it's like to be a Soldier in the U.S. Army. Crowds swelled as participants took a break from the loops and dips of roller coasters to jump into Humvees and the new UH-60 Black Hawk simulator. Participants also met America's Army Real Hero Tommy Rieman, who told his heroic story to participants, handed out action figures and signed autographs. While in Chicago, a reporter from the Wall Street Journal stopped by to report on the momentum the VAE has been gathering and the Army's innovative style of marketing. The story appeared on the front page of the Journal's July 28 edition.

Rochester Air Show

After saying goodbye to Bugs Bunny, Batman and the rest of the Six Flags community, the VAE headed to upstate New York for the Rochester International Air Show. Attendees came out to the air show to experience perfect weather, high-flying aeronautics and, of course, the Virtual Army Experience. Participants got an extra treat—the chance to meet two America's Army Real Heroes, SGT Jason Mike and SGT Tommy Rieman. The pair of heroes handed out action figures to participants who excelled on the virtual battlefield, and they talked about the importance of teamwork and commitment. SGT Rieman raised public awareness of the VAE's presence at the air show by appearing live on WROC's Wake Up Rochester on July 25. All in all, the event was a great success!

The VAE Draws Long Lines and Satisfied Participants in June

The Virtual Army Experience (VAE) continued its tour of our great nation during the month of June, with stops in North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia, Iowa and Alabama. As the weather heated into triple digits, VAE participants stayed cool under the pressure of the virtual battlefield, thanks to the VAE's air- conditioned dome. In June, more than 8,000 people learned more about the United States Army by visiting the VAE.

MCAS Cherry Point and Ocean City Senior Week

The VAE started the month in the split configuration, with one half in North Carolina at the Marine Corps Air Show at Cherry Point and the other half in Maryland at Ocean City Senior Week.

At MCAS Cherry Point, despite 120-degree temperatures, the VAE remained one of the most popular attractions at the air show and was featured on several local television stations.

Up the coast in Ocean City, Md., the VAE was set up directly in between the Ocean City Boardwalk and the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean City's Senior Week is a long-standing tradition in Maryland. This year, it featured a new dynamic with the 1st Annual Ocean City Air Show. High school seniors and air show attendees had the opportunity to experience the life of a U.S. Army Soldier and meet America's Army Real Hero Jason Mike, who told his story and passed out Real Heroes action figures to VAE participants who excelled on the virtual battlefield.

Air Power Over Hampton Roads and the Quad City Air Show

After two great events in Maryland and North Carolina, the VAE kept one half of its structure in the mid-Atlantic region at Air Power Over Hampton Roads, while the other half headed to the Midwest to make an appearance at the Quad City Air Show.

At Air Power Over Hampton Roads, the VAE was ideally situated at a strategic entry and exit point. Needless to say, lines were long as people excitedly waited to mount up in their HMMWVs and take their place on the virtual battlefield. While waiting in line, VAE participants checked out the Army dragster and met driver Don O'Neal. After completing their mission, VAE attendees met another hero, America's Army Real Hero Tommy Rieman. SGT Rieman debriefed them on their mission, shared his story, and handed out America's Army Real Hero action figures to the top performers of each round.

In the Midwest, the VAE made its second appearance at the Quad City Air Show. For the past 21 years the Davenport Municipal Airport has hosted the Quad City Air Show, and organizers were excited for the return of the VAE. Joined by the Blue Angels and the Army's Golden Knights as one of the air show's main attractions, the VAE had close to 1,000 participants from the Quad City region.

Huntsville International Air Show

During the last weekend in June, the VAE appeared at the Huntsville International Air Show in Huntsville, Ala. Huntsville is the home of the VAE's software engineering management team, so key members of the America's Army team were in attendance to meet with participants. The VAE attracted large crowds during the first day of the show. Participants were excited to meet America's Army Real Hero SGT Jason Mike and have a chance to take home one of his newly released action figures.

During the second day of the show, the area was hit with extreme weather conditions. At approximately 2 PM CST a microburst swept through the Huntsville International Airport, causing the air show to shut down early. The severe weather caused a number of injuries at the air show, including one fatality. Fortunately, no one participating in the VAE was injured during the storm.

It was a sad end to the Huntsville International Air Show and the hearts of the VAE staff members go out to everyone involved in the unfortunate accidents surrounding the show.

Upcoming Events:

The VAE continues to tour the country during the month of July. Mark your calendar for these upcoming VAE events:

July 10–20
Six Flags Great America – Chicago, IL

Rochester Air Show – Rochester, NY

Come Rain or More Rain, VAE Attracts Thousands

The VAE spent much of the month of May traveling up and down the East Coast, with stops at five air shows and the 2008 Boy Scout Camporee. While rainy weather conditions at many events prevented planes from flying, attendees were able to stay dry under the VAE dome and learn about the technologies of today's Army. During the month of May more than 6,000 people had stepped onto the virtual battlefield of the Virtual Army Experience.

MacDill Air Show

The VAE's first stop of the month was the MacDill Air Show May 3-4. This was the VAE's second appearance at the show and attendees anxiously awaited its return. During last year's event, local Tampa residents braved the Florida heat and waited in line for up to three hours to test their skills on the virtual battlefield. This year, the VAE was just as popular, with close to 3,000 participants. America's Army Real Hero SGT Tommy Rieman returned to MacDill Air Force Base and presented his action figure to select VAE goers who excelled on the virtual battlefield.

Boy Scouts Camporee and Wings Over Pittsburgh

After impressing MacDill Air Show attendees for two years running, the VAE split in two and headed north.

Half of the VAE traveled to West Point, N.Y., to give Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts a chance to experience the VAE. From May 9 to May 11, the VAE opened its door to hundreds of Scouts at the 46th annual West Point Invitational Camporee. Despite the rain, the VAE was one of the Camporee's main attractions. One local newspaper went as far to say the VAE was the "highlight of the weekend." America's Army Real Hero SGT Rieman was back onsite, sharing his story about how the Army has had a positive impact on his life.

During the same weekend, the other half of the VAE headed to Pennsylvania to appear at Wings Over Pittsburgh, May 10–11. This was the VAE's first time to Pittsburgh, and veteran and rookie America's Army gamers alike lined up for their chance to step on the virtual battlefield.America's Army Real Hero SGT Jason Mike attended the event, shared his story with the groups coming through the VAE, and appeared live on KDKA's Pittsburgh Today Live to promote the VAE's presence at Wings Over Pittsburgh. Although rain shortened Sunday's show, the VAE was a huge hit.

Salute to Veterans Air Show and May Fly Air Show & Festival

After a scheduled maintenance weekend, the VAE was back on the road in its split configuration. May 24–25 half of the VAE appeared at the Salute to Veterans Air Show in Columbia, Mo., while the other half opened its doors at the May Fly Air Show & Festival in Florence, S.C.

This was the VAE's second time at the Salute to Veterans Air Show, and attendees were excited to have us back. The rain kept planes grounded on Saturday but it didn't stop people from lining up to step under the dome and hear from America's Army Real Hero SGT Rieman.

Weather was also an issue on Saturday during the May Fly Air Show & Festival, but it didn't stop the show. The VAE was one of the top attractions over the weekend and people were excited to have the chance to meet America's Army Real Hero SGT Mike. Other air show displays and performers included a military warbird display, the Dynamic F-16 Viper East demo team, the "Shockwave" Jet Truck and the Mad Bomber pyrotechnic act.

McGuire Air Expo

For its last stop in May, the VAE returned to its full-scale display at the McGuire Air Force Base Air Expo. During the three-day event, the VAE joined the Thunderbirds as one of the show's main attractions. Unfortunately, the poor weather cancelled Saturday's events at noon, but once the weather cleared on Sunday, the VAE reopened its doors and gave people the chance to take a virtual test drive of what it's like to be a Soldier in the U.S. Army.

Wings Over Meridian

The VAE kicked off its first full-scale event of the year at Wings Over Meridian in Meridian, Miss. This was the VAE's first appearance in Mississippi, and VAE staff were excited to be a part of the show. March 29–30 the VAE opened its doors to air show attendees and joined the Blue Angels as one of the main attractions at the show. America's Army Real Hero SGT Jason Mike attended the event and shared his story with the groups coming through the VAE. Local radio personalities Scott Stevens and Lee Taylor conducted live interviews inside the 20,000-square-foot experience.

Florida International Air Show

The VAE's next stop was Punta Gorda, Fla., for the Florida International Air Show, April 5–6. This was the 28thFlorida International Air Show and the VAE was proud to be a part of the local tradition. VAE staff were happy to see the return of America's Army Real Hero 2LT Jerry Wolford and gave his action figure to select individuals who distinguished themselves on the virtual battlefield. This was 2LT Wolford's first appearance at the VAE since he welcomed the newest addition to his family late last year. Congratulations, 2LT Wolford!

Six Flags Over Georgia

After Punta Gorda it was on to Atlanta where the VAE engaged Spring Break visitors at Six Flags Over Georgia, April 11–13. The VAE caught the attention of Spring Breakers who were gathering to ride the Georgia Cyclone and the Mind Bender. Our SMEs think the VAE is even more exciting than the roller coasters. This was the VAE's sixth stop for 2008 and its second Six Flags appearance of the year. Stay tuned for additional Six Flags stops during the VAE's 2008 schedule!

Prairie Air Show and Coastal Carolina Air Show

After giving the Georgia Cyclone a run for its money at Six Flags, the VAE split in two and headed to two different air shows.

During April 19–20 weekend half of the VAE appeared at the Prairie Air Show in Peoria, Ill., while the other half opened its doors at the Coastal Carolina Air Show in Wilmington, N.C. The VAE generated long lines over the weekend and captured the hearts of air show attendees.

At the Prairie Air Show, the VAE was privileged to host a hometown America's Army Real Hero at the event, SFC Robert Groff, who grew up in Peoria and still resides in the area. SFC Groff shared his heroic story and inspired individuals from his hometown.

Vidalia Onion Festival and Air Show

The VAE's last stop for April was the 31st Vidalia Onion Festival and Air Show in Vidalia, Ga. The VAE was open April 26–27 and garnered as much attention as the world-famous Vidalia onion rings!

The VAE had long lines all weekend and even had a visit from a local celebrity, 2008's Miss Vidalia Onion Kay-Lyn Tatum, who stopped by to test her skills on the virtual battlefield.

Prior to the VAE opening at the Vidalia Onion Festival and Air Show, America's Army Real Hero SGT Jason Mike spent the day with 190 eighth grade students at J.R. Trippe Middle School. SGT Mike shared his story with the kids, told them about the important role combat medics play in today's Army, and invited them to visit the Virtual Army Experience.
